"Waiting on" Wednesday: Ward Against Death

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're anxiously awaiting.

My pick for this Wednesday...

Ward Against Death by Melanie Card
{Chronicles of a Reluctant Necromancer ~ Book #1}

Twenty-year-old Ward de’Ath expected this to be a simple job—bring a nobleman’s daughter back from the dead for fifteen minutes, let her family say good-bye, and launch his fledgling career as a necromancer. Goddess knows he can’t be a surgeon—the Quayestri already branded him a criminal for trying—so bringing people back from the dead it is.

But when Ward wakes the beautiful Celia Carlyle, he gets more than he bargained for. Insistent that she’s been murdered, Celia begs Ward to keep her alive and help her find justice. By the time she drags him out her bedroom window and into the sewers, Ward can’t bring himself to break his damned physician’s Oath and desert her.

However, nothing is as it seems—including Celia. One second, she’s treating Ward like sewage, the next she’s kissing him. And for a nobleman’s daughter, she sure has a lot of enemies. If he could just convince his heart to give up on the infuriating beauty, he might get out of this alive… (Goodreads)
*Release Date: August 2, 2011

Why I'm Waiting:
I'm always up for reading a new kind of paranormal romance and this story sounds like an intriguing adventure with death, mystery and romance! I haven't read about too many necromancers but the entire concept sounds fascinating.

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

Mini Review: Brethren Beginnings by Deena Remiel

Brethren Beginnings Volume 1
Author: Deena Remiel
Genre: Paranormal
Publisher: Deena Remiel
Format: ebook

Buy it here:
Amazon | Smashwords

The Brethren. Who are they and why are they here? Discover the origins of these enigmatic angels manifested on Earth for millennia. Lose yourself in their compelling stories of human salvation and triumph over Evil. (Goodreads)

My Romancing Thoughts:

A small but intriguing glimpse into the lives of three angels you'll want to get to know better!

This short story introduces us to three angels, Gabriel, Nathanael and Cassiel, knows as The Brethren, who have been sent to protect humans from the incessant evil plaguing the earth. Each has been sent with their own purpose, but their fight to overcome evil and compassion for humanity is enough to make you fall in love with these characters. Their stories will touch your heart and crave more of these heavenly souls!

The author draws you in with her writing and really gives these angels an almost human quality that you connect with from the very beginning. Gabriel is the protector of the lost and exploited, Nathanael is the tortured hero and warrior, fighting injustice and then there's Cassiel, the healer who brings happiness and comfort to sick children. It's extremely difficult to choose just one but I'm a sucker for a tortured hero and Nathanael won me over with his bad ass warrior ways and conflicted soul!

Brethren Beginnings covers a lot of ground for a novella. It's beautifully written with well developed characters that come to life and take you along on their journey to vanquish evil and help the innocent. I'm a paranormal romance lover and even though this book lacked romance, I was just as invested in the story and its characters. Deena Remiel has captured my attention with her eloquent writing and sexy avenging angels which I plan on reading more of!

Darkhouse Blog Tour: Guest Post & Giveaway with Karina Halle

Welcome to my stop on the Darkhouse Blog Tour! Today I have the wonderful Karina Halle telling us a little about her book and its male protagonist Dex Foray, the not so heroic hero! And guess what? there's also a giveaway!!!

Darkhouse by Karina HalleDarkhouse by Karina Halle

Paperback, 323 pages
Published May 1st 2011 by Metal Blonde Books
ISBN: 9781461079859

There’s always been something a bit off about Perry Palomino. Though she’s been dealing with a quarter-life crisis and post-college syndrome like any other twenty-something, she’s still not what you would call “ordinary.” For one thing, there’s her past which she likes to pretend never happened, and then there’s the fact that she sees ghosts. Luckily for her, that all comes in handy when she stumbles across Dex Foray, an eccentric producer for an upcoming webcast on ghost hunters. Even though the show’s budget is non-existent and Dex himself is a maddening enigma, Perry is instantly drawn into a world that both threatens her life and seduces her with a sense of importance. Her uncle’s haunted lighthouse provides the perfect catalyst and backdrop for a mystery that unravels the threads of Perry’s fragile sanity and causes her to fall for a man, who, like the most dangerous of ghosts, may not be all that he seems.

“Dex Foray – the anti-hero”  by Karina Halle

Love him, hate him, he’ll get under your skin.

When you create a character who skirts a fine line between being likeable and being aggravating, you’re bound to draw fire from both sides of the equation. When Dex Foray first sauntered his way into my life, hands in the pockets of his black hoodie, all brooding and scowly-faced with an Errol Flynn moustache, I knew I had a doozey on my hands. I didn’t set out to make him what he is, a walking enigma, he just sort of…evolved that way. With a bizarre (and hidden) backstory under his belt, Dex proudly became the anti-hero to the Experiment in Terror Series and the perfect foil to our main character, Perry Palomino.

What I didn’t expect when I published Darkhouse (and Red Fox, the next book in the series) was how the readers were going to respond to him. I knew how I felt about Dex, but then again, I know where he’s coming from. But I never expected to have such a wide range of responses about a man that my friend Wendy calls “the man you love to hate.” Take a look at these snippets from various reviews as he runs the gamut from being hated to being swooned over:

“I especially didn't get her attraction to Dex. What, if any, traits did this guy have that could possibly draw her to him? He was rude and distant”

“I also wanted to kick Dex but that's because I found him conceited”

“I found him arrogant and a little psychotic”

“Dex is a strange, strange character. Dude, this guy is weird! I honestly couldn’t work him out – one minute I was expecting him to do something totally evil or even mean to Perry, the next I was waiting for him to jump her bones.”

“It’s hard to tell if he’s sincere or if he’s just messing with her because he knows she likes him”

“At times in the book, I had to wonder if maybe he wasn't screwing with Perry just for the sake of the show”

“Dex is a mystery. I don't know what his intentions are but I'm glad he is around. Really glad. Stop me from humping him kind o glad”

“Dex admits he lies and by doing so disproves he's a liar because he confesses to the deceit. A true liar would never willingly reveal this deprecating detail”

“The mystery and labyrinth to be unraveled is the character Dex. All at once a rake, creep, gentleman, he is a conundrum, and man after my own heart.”

“I liked his almost crazy attitude, he was walking a razors edge of sanity and crazyville”

“Dex, the hot male character, is precious. He seems to be a gentleman of the old school, although he had some rough edges in the beginning.” This quote came from novelist Carol Piner, who picked up on one aspect of Dex’s personality that not many had. “Lastly, one of my favorite lines in "Darkhouse" jumped out at me. Dex was talking to Perry, who is a little over-weight and not a gorgeous female like Dex's girlfriend. Used to being ignored or insulted, she told Dex she didn't eat pies when, in fact, she loved them but didn't want to seem like a pig and indulge herself. He said to her, "I just want you to enjoy the pies in life." God, I could have eaten him with a spoon.”

Jenny over at Forever Young Adult’s problem with him didn’t seem to come from his personality, but from his eyebrow ring (which prompted a hilarious eyebrow-ring discussion in the comments): “Dex, how I found you swoony with your 90′s eyebrow ring, I’ll never know. But somehow, those stormy eyes of yours won me over.”

I’m sure if Dex existed (and I’m quite sure he does), he’d probably get a huge kick out of all of this. The more bad things people say about him, the more he’d relish it. He enjoys being the “bad” guy and being the brutally honest smartass, maybe because it’s more fun that way. Or maybe because he’s got an enormous wall up around him that only the occasional good part is able to rappel down. Sometimes I’m not too sure what is going on with him, simply because he often does things I didn’t plan for or says things when he should have kept his wide yap shut, but that’s what I love so much about writing him. He’s unpredictable, seriously flawed and full of pleasant surprises. I hope he keeps you all your toes, like he keeps me on mine.

Follow Friday {18}

Follow {my Book Blog} Friday is a weekly event hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.

This week's question:
Name 3 authors that you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from?

This is not an easy question to answer but I'm going to stick with some of my more recent favorite authors that I'll probably never get to meet in person...

J.R. Ward: Who wouldn't love a real inside look into the Black Dagger Brotherhood?!

Kim Harrison: I'd love to talk to her about her creative world in The Hollows and get some dirt on Rachel and her gang.

Kresley Cole: Each of her books tops the last...it'd be interesting to know how she comes up with her love matches, especially in the Immortals After Dark Series.

My Romancing Thoughts:

A ghost hunting adventure with original characters guaranteed to please!

Perry Palomino is a college graduate who is back home living with her parents, teenage sister and working at an advertising company as a receptionist. With a troubled past, Perry is trying to find herself in the world like any ordinary young woman; only Perry is far from ordinary. She has the ability to see spirits and ghosts, an ability she keeps to herself. On a weekend family trip to her uncle's, Perry encounters ghost hunter, Dex Foray, while she's exploring the rumored haunted lighthouse on the property. When things get a little too paranormal in the lighthouse, Dex realizes Perry is the real deal and jumps at the chance to have her cast in his new ghost hunting show, ensuing a chain of events that will bring Perry to the brink of losing herself in the dangerous and haunting supernatural world they discover.

I'm a huge ghost hunter, paranormal investigating fan, making this book my cup of tea. This is a fun, character driven story with enough spooky paranormal elements to keep you on the edge of your seat but not scare you to death! The author brings the characters to life with her descriptive and splendid writing style, allowing the reader to connect with them almost instantly.

Perry is a self-discovering, flawed protagonist you can't help but love. Sure she might get on your nerves a tad bit, at times, but just about every woman who has been 22 can identify with her in one way or another. I found it absolutely hilarious that she initially can't stand Dex but then lusts for him...all while questioning herself for finding the guy incredibly sexy when he treats her like a child for half of the book! Perry lacks some confidence when you first meet her but eventually begins to find her way on her own. She's smart and sticks to her own style which you have to admire her for in a world constantly concerned with fitting in.

Dex is definitely an enigma. He's good looking and charming one minute and the biggest jerk the next. You never know what his motives are and want to hate him, until he does or says something to totally redeem himself. I'm all for loving a bad boy but didn't really fall for Dex in this book, he has potential, but there are times you just want to slap him and give him a piece of your mind (which was for more than half of the book in my case)! As unappealing as he might seem after my assessment, Dex and Perry have some great moments and sexual tension that keeps you interested throughout the story.

Darkhouse is a fun tribute to all the entertaining ghost hunter and paranormal investigating shows out there. It focuses more on the characters than on the supernatural, but there are a few creepy moments for those who love a little scare. The supporting characters add a bit more flavor and humor to the story that blends in perfectly. I found the pace a little slow at the very beginning but that all changes after the first few chapters. Karina Halle does a fantastic job of keeping her story and characters believable while extremely entertaining. Fans of the paranormal and supernatural will find Darkhouse a promising start to a series that can only get better!

My sexy snippet:

She turned her face up to his, a wordless invitation. His warm breath fanned her face, and even through the strange haze that seemed to have enveloped her, she thrilled a little at the ragged sound of his breathing, at the erratic beat of his heart against her chest.

"Lily," he said again, and this time it was almost reverent. He bent his head to hers, and Lily's lips parted in anticipation. She had never wanted a man's kiss so desperately; her entire being seemed to vibrate with desire. Her breath stilled as she waited for the press of his lips against her own. But instead of taking what she offered, Ty's mouth only grazed her cheek, and his long fingers deftly cupped her chin t turn her head to the side.

Lily made a noise then, a soft, frustrated moan that drew a chuckle from her tormentor.

"Patience, sweetheart," he admonished herm his gruff brogue more pronounced now. "Too fast and you'll spoil it."

Embraced by Blood Virtual Book Tour: Review & Giveaway

I'd like to welcome you to my stop on Laurie London's Embraced by Blood Virtual Book today! Read on for my review of this deliciously sweet paranormal romance, more on the author and a fabulous giveaway!

Series: {Sweetblood ~ Book #2}
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: HQN
Format: ebook, 384 pages
Source: Received via NetGalley for blog tour

Buy it here:

Deep within the forests of the Pacific Northwest, two vampire coalitions battle for supremacy—Guardian enforcers who safeguard humanity and Darkblood rogues who kill like their ancient ancestors.

Alfonso Serrano is a hunted man. For months he’s managed to elude the Darkbloods, vengeful foes who won’t rest until he’s dead. But he still craves one dangerous temptation: Lily DeGraff, the sexy Guardian agent he’ll risk anything to protect.

Lily is a wanted woman. Her talent for tracking Sweet-a rare blood type that’s addictive to vampires-makes her a prime target for enemy capture. Her only hope is the stealthy vampire operative who stole into her bed...then left her in despair. Danger aside-Lily won’t let Alfonso near her heart again-until an irresistible hunger draws them back together...and into an assassin’s snare.

My Romancing Thoughts:

Alfonso Serrano is a wanted man in a world where vampires are torn by two different agendas, Darkbloods, bloodthirsty predators and Guardians, the protectors of humanity. Leaving everything important to him behind, Alfonso has spent his time evading the Darkbloods who seek vengeance for his betrayal. As a Guardian with a special gift, Lily DeGraff is an asset to her team and a valuable asset for the Darkbloods as well. When Lily becomes just as wanted as Alfonso by the Darkbloods, he has no choice but to go after the woman he loves and sacrificed long ago. Their reunion will ignite long lost passions that will once again be threatened by the enemy.

I initially thought I'd be lost while reading the second book in a series but Embraced by Blood gives you enough back story and details to jump right into the story without feeling overwhelmed. This book has a solid story line with amazing characters and non-stop action. If you've ever read my reviews you know I adore an Alpha hero and this book gives you that and more. Alfonso is ever the Alpha and Lily is an Alpha heroine in her own right...it's great to have two equally strong characters with some of the best sexual tension I've read come together! The main characters in this paranormal romance already share a history, so all the courting and getting to know one another has already been established, giving you a deeper look into their relationship.

Alfonso is a great tortured hero who is willing to sacrifice his feelings to keep those he loves safe. It's very easy to connect with his character from the start and want him to ultimately have a happy ending. His loyalty and devotion are the two traits that make his character beautiful, yet haunting. What I admire most about Alfonso is his acknowledgement of his past errors and his ability to grow from them, he is a tortured soul but doesn't harp on that...he's determined to fight for what he believes in no matter the cost.

Lily is a fierce heroine who can hold a candle to any of her male Guardian trackers. Her strength and take charge attitude make her the perfect match for Alfonso. She also shows vulnerability when it comes to love and her daughter, which makes her character multi-faceted and realistic. Lily struggles with opening her heart up to Alfonso again, until she's faced with the possibility of losing him forever and decides to give into the only love she's ever known. Seeing a strong woman like her finally wear her heart on her sleeve is truly commendable if you ask me. There are scenes between Lily and Alfonso that are heartwarming and then there are scenes that are plain scorching...these two know how to heat things up!

Embraced by Blood is a fast paced paranormal romance combining mystery, suspense and romance in a fresh and creative vampire world. The supporting story lines keep the intrigue on high and the unexpected twists add some drama to the forbidden romance that encompasses this book. Your heart will be on an emotional roller coaster from chapter one and take you on an unbelievable ride you won't want to end. Laurie London has outdone herself with a new, smart and sexy vampire series. A must read for those who like their vampires dark, sweet and sexy!
